Abstract
The random-phase-approximation dielectric function for the homogeneous electron gas has been derived by Lindhard. Here, we generalize this work to include fluctuation effects, and we also study their influence on the Friedel oscillations. In particular, our generalized function is analytic for all wave vectors and frequencies, in contrast to the Lindhard function. Keywords
