Abstract
During 1954-1961 Microsporum canis was isolated 1117 times from 653 males, 457 females and 7 of unrecorded sex. Of adults, 9 males and 20 females bore the infection. Monthly incidence was similar during the year studied. An increase was always observed in July-August, lasting during the winter, and decreasing ia March or April. Among 377 children, incidence was greater in males between 5-9 years; female infections showed no such relationship. Scalp infections showed a similar pattern. Of 1081 children infected, 644 were males and 437 females, a ratio of 1.46:1 among the 29 adults the ratio was 0.45:1. The M:F ratio of the scalp infections varied during the 8 years between 1.7:1 to 4.2:1; average, 2.42:1. Body infections showed a M:F ratio of 0.88:1; arm and leg infections were M: F = 0.35:1. From 3 main foci in the Montreal area the disease spread in 1954 to encompass, by 1956, 1/3 of the Montreal island. The area infected shrunk in 1958/59; spread again in 1960, and in 1961 declined by 50%. The conspicuously high incidence of animal microsporosis in the Montreal area during 8 years is discussed. Keywords
