Abstract
Faith Gibson found a study trip to America very helpful in unravelling the complexities of defining advanced roles in practice Confusion reigns. Debates in the nursing press, as well as the various local initiatives to develop ‘new’ nursing roles, have contributed to that confusion. The primary reason, therefore, for submitting a proposal to The Florence Nightingale Foundation for a Travel Scholarship was to provide an opportunity to observe and examine developments that have taken place in the United States of America (USA) related to advancing clinical practice roles. The decision to visit the USA was in recognition of the number of research papers and textbooks emanating from that country revealing the nature of advanced practice in adult and paediatric nursing practice. Keywords
