HISTOLOGY OF LUPUS ERYTHEMATOSUS

Abstract
GOECKERMAN and Montgomery1 in 1932 wrote to the effect that the changes in discoid and in disseminated lupus erythematosus are the same and vary only in degree and that a sharp dividing line cannot be drawn. In 1939 Montgomery2 said that the histologic studies of the skin often permit a definite diagnosis of lupus erythematosus to be established, especially in cases in which the disease is of a disseminated type, but classification as to the type of lupus erythematosus or any conclusion as regards prognosis of a given case cannot be made on the basis of biopsy of a single lesion or groups of lesions. In 1949 Montgomery and McCreight3 stated that "we believe that the histologic diagnosis of disseminated lupus erythematosus can be made in the majority of cases, if the specimens for biopsies are taken from a lesion that has not been subject
