NEUTRINOS FROM SUPERNOVAE

Abstract
The historic detection of neutrinos from supernova SN1987A demonstrated that they are an invaluable source of information about neutrino properties and the dynamics of gravitational stellar collapse. A number of experiments are currently being prepared for the next detection of the supernova neutrino burst. This article reviews the data of SN1987A, the puzzles they presented and the lessons about neutrino properties that they provided. A special emphasis is put on the preparation for future detections and evaluation of an improvement in understanding basic neutrino properties that can be achieved.
