Abstract
A new mechanism for singlet—triplet transitions is developed by considering the direct interactions between the radiation field and the electron spins. It is concluded that this effect may in general be neglected with respect to contributions due to the perturbation of the wave functions by spin‐orbit interactions, but that it might become important in some cases where the spin‐orbit coupling is small. Keywords
