A CASE OF SPINA BIFIDA COMBINED WITH DIASTEMATOMYELY, THE ANOMALY OF CHIARI AND HYDROCEPHALY

Abstract
Description of a new-born female with spina bidifa aperta in the lumbo-sacral region, consisting in complete rachischizis from L 1 on, myelo-meningo-cele and diastematomyely in combination with hydrocephalia interna and the anomaly of Chiari. Microscopic investigation of the central nervous system was done, in particular at the level of the diastematomyely. An attempt is made to show a connection between the spina bifida and the hydrocephaly by explaining both anomalies to be caused by one factor which exerted its influence in the 3d week of embryonic life. By assuming as the effect of this factor a local overgrowth of the neural plate which interfered with the normal process of closing of the neural groove, an hypothetical explanation of the morphogenesis of the myelo-meningocele and the diastematomyely is given.
