Abstract
Mercuration reactions of sulfadrugs(1:1 mole ratio), using mercuric oxide and glacial acetic acid, have been carried out with sulfanilamide (SN), sulfaguanidine(SG), sulfathiazole (ST), sulfapyridine(SP), sulfadiazine(SD), sulfamerazine (SM), sulfamethazine (SZ), succinylsulfathiazole(SST) and phthalylsulfathiazole(PST). The resulting complexes were characterized by analyses and infrared spectral studies. Mercuration by electrophilic substitution occurs on benzene ring in sulfanilamide and sulfaguanidine whereas in the other drugs it occurs in the heterocyclic ring. Keywords
