Abstract
THE Archives of Surgery is pleased to dedicate this issue to Women in Surgery. In 1993 we witnessed the appointment of Olga Jonasson, MD, as director of the Department of Education and Surgical Services of the American College of Surgeons and the elections of Karen Geis, MD, as president of the Association of Academic Surgery, Kathryn Anderson, MD, as secretary of the American College of Surgeons, and Linda Graham, MD, as president-elect of the Society of University Surgeons. Our most optimistic and visionary colleagues could not have predicted such events as we entered this decade. The Archives takes pride in presenting a series of articles that discuss issues concerning women in surgery and feature women as peer surgical scientists. We look forward to a more complete society in which a special issue is not necessary to celebrate a given. The growing number of women in surgery and the surgical specialties
