Abstract
The method developed in recent papers for calculating the characteristics of the high pressure discharge is extended to helium. The properties of the helium discharge derived in this way are compared with those of high pressure mercury vapour, and it is shown that a loading of the order of 104 watts per cm. of arc is required in the former to produce conditions usually associated with the normal operation of the high pressure mercury vapour discharge at 10 to 100 watts per cm. of arc. Keywords
