Abstract
A nationwide panel survey in 1971,1973, and 1975 finds that work expectations change dramatically during the years normally associated with retirement. Indeed, over two-fifths of those never expecting to stop working were retired 4 years later; those expecting to retire were more likely to reach that goal. These findings argue against the use of results from cross-sectional studies to plan changes in Social Security retired-worker or pension benefits.
