With technology that grew out of DNA and protein research, scientists are creating a variety of tools that may make it possible to find cancer in its early stages, make better decisions on therapy, and match drugs to patients who can benefit the most. A major European trial, for example, is now testing DNA arrays for diagnosing breast cancer and guiding treatment. It remains to be seen whether the new tests are robust enough to win favor with drug companies and regulatory agencies.
