The Routinization of Charisma: A Consideration of Catholicism

Abstract
After showing how basic Max Weber's concept of the routinization of charisma is, both to his sociological theory in general, and to his sociology of religion in particular, the paper raises the question whether Catholicism has in fact become routinized in the way Weber thought unavoidable. Three arguments are used to prove that this has not happened: the original charisma has been repeatedly re-awakened; in the so-called forum internum, i.e., the practice of the confessional, no legalization has taken place; and the growth of a rationalizing theology has been counter-balanced by a permanent and ever-renewed exploration of mystery, especially through the medium of art.
