PROGESTIN STUDIES: PREGNANDIOL EXCRETION12¹²

Abstract
Pregnandiol was extracted throughout the luteal phase in 9 normal menstrual cycles in [female][female] who presented normal menstrual histories and physical findings. Detns. made before the 9th day following the onset of flow failed to reveal the substance in the urine. The onset of the subsequent flow bears a definite relationship to the cessation of corpus luteum activity as reflected by the disappearance of pregnandiol from the urine 1 to 4 days before menstrual onset. No pregnandiol was isolated in the cycle studied in a case of metrorrhagia. A series of 5 normal pregnancies showed a gradual increase in excretion until term. Two cases of threatened abortion responded to treatment; one aborted. In 1 case of severe toxemia of pregnancy, pregnandiol excretion was normal. No pregnandiol was found in a girl, aged 3, who developed virilism from an adrenal cortical adenoma.
