Biochemical changes occurring during the germination of bacterial spores

Abstract
The germinal process in spores of Bacillus megaterium and B. subtilis is accompanied by a 30% loss in cell dry wt. The material excreted consists mainly of amino acids, peptides, hexosamine attached to a non-dialysable peptide, and a substance absorbing strongly in the u.-v., with maxima at 2625, 2700, 2775 A. It is suggested that resting spores contain little or no water, and that during germination there is a simultaneous exchange of water from the medium for solids from the spore.
