Abstract
This review considers the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in medical informatics. It begins by describing artificial intelligence and then places it in the context of medical computing. Knowledge processing is emphasized. Following a brief review of the state-of-the-art in medical expert systems, a final section considers how artificial intelligence in medicine (AIM) can provide a focus for medical informatics that emphasizes the acquisition, evaluation, and utilization of medical knowledge.
