The Measurement of Horizontal Air Motion near Clouds from Aircraft

Abstract
The measurement of air motion is described for a flight in and around small cumulus clouds using a high-quality inertial platform and an integrated data handling system. The detailed and extensive tests on the data necessary to process it and secure its reliability are discussed in outline. The air motion data presented on this occasion is judged to be in error to less than about 0.3 m sec−1 The observed motion of the air near the clouds is discussed. The cloudy outline is observed to move at a speed related closely to that of the surface air and moves relative to its environment at the same level. Almost everywhere the motion on the cloud edge is outward away from the cloud in the two cases discussed.
