Question of Inner-Shell Electron Pickup during $α$ Decay

Abstract

The fraction of

{He}^{+}

ions relative to

α

particles emitted from a thin

{}^{210}{Po}

source in coincidence with

L

x rays from the daughter product Pb has been measured. The result,

{(\frac{{He}^{+}}{α})}_{L} = ({0.7}_{- 0.7}^{+ 0.3}) %

, does not support an earlier proposal that 65% of the

L

-vacancy production is due to electron pickup. Uncertainties in source composition and the electron-pickup hypothesis are discussed.
