Bulk Density Measurements on Certain Soils High in Coarse Fragments

Abstract
Bulk density methods were employed in repetitious sampling of Millheim silt loam containing high amounts of soft shale coarse fragments. The bulk density of a 377,560 cm3 soil volume was also determined as a reference for evaluating the samples collected. Statistical analyses of the data indicate that the 347.5 cm3 core sample best evaluates bulk density. However, in soils containing fragments harder than shale, cores are impossible to collect. Clod samples closely approximate 347.5 cm3 core samples in evaluating bulk density and can be taken in almost any soil. Thus, they are a useful sample for the determination of bulk density with the advantage that it can be used for moisture retention measurements.
