Abstract
It is argued that gauge theories with the Higgs-Kibble mechanism do not involve the spontaneous breaking of physical symmetries. The relationships between masses and coupling constants, usually considered a manifestation of the remnant of the symmetry, can be obtained, at least in the Abelian-Higgs model, directly from renormalizability and unitarity requirements. Keywords
