Value of Five Electrocardiographic Criteria Correlated with Echocardiographie Left Ventricular Hypertrophy in Elderly Patients

Abstract
A blinded prospective study was performed to correlate the presence or absence of left ventricular hypertrophy determined by five electrocardiographic criteria with left ventricular mass determined by M-mode or two-dimensional echocardiography in unselected patients over 62 years old in a long-term health care facility. Left ventricular hypertrophy (left ventricular mass ≥225 g) occurred in 167 of 476 elderly patients (35%). The sensitivity of the electrocardiographic criteria ranged from 12 to 29%, the specificity from 93 to 96, the positive predictive value from 62 to 71, and the negative predictive value from 67 to 71 %.
