MINIMUM WEIGHT DESIGN OF MULTI-PURPOSE BEAM COLUMNS OF SOLID CONSTRUCTION

Abstract
The paper deals with the minimum-weight design of pin-ended members that have to serve as a beam for a pen of their life and as a column for the rest. Constraints are prescribed on the maximum allowable deflection as a beam and the minimum permissible buckling load as a column. The range of design parameters is divided into regions in which the minimum-weight design is constrolted by either one of the two design objectives. The method is illustrated with respect to a member of solid cross-section, and the economy achieved by optimization is discussed.
