Effect of 6-(Substituted) Purines and Gibberellin on the Rate of Seed Germination.

Abstract
Pre-soaking Early Curled Simpson lettuce seed in a combination of gibberellin (100 [mu]g/ml) and an "active" 6-(substituted) purine derivative (e.g., 6-benzylaminopurine at 10 [mu]g/ml), followed by germination in the dark at 30[degree], stimulates the rate of germination in a synergistic manner. For example, gibberellin or 6-benzylaminopurine gave percentage germination values of 15 and 23%,respectively, while seed pre-treated with a mixture of these compounds gave a germination value of 93%, under identical experimental conditions. The rate of germination of carpet grass and clover seed is stimulated by pre -treating these seeds with several of the purine derivatives, and gibberellin augments this stimulation effect with the carpet grass seed.
