Abstract
The substitution of 5% high (6%) nucleic acid yeast for casein in a synthetic diet containing 45% casein and 0.06% 2-acetylaminofluorene increased the average survival of 18 Fischer line 344 female rats from 349 [plus or minus] 11. to 409 [plus or minus]9.4 days but did not prevent the development of the induced neoplasms. Substitution of 1, 2 or 5% purified desoxyribonuclelc acid or 5% brewers yeast for casein in similar diets did not effect the average survival period or frequency of occurrence of induced neoplasms. The high protein diet appeared to increase the occurrence of induced squamous cell carcinoma of the external auditory meatus. Cancers of the external ear were observed in 33 to 75% of the rats on the 45% casein diets compared with 0 to 25% ear cancers in previously studied groups of rats on a 26% casein diet.
