The Artificial Corneal Endothelium

Abstract
The surgical techniques and postoperative management of corneal grafting with an artificial endothelium have been improved. The best technique to date employs a graft of mushroom shape with a silicone membrane attached to the posterior surface of the stem. Since it is possible to use nonviable donor tissue for this procedure, the donor cornea can be lathed in the frozen state to its mushroom shape. The silicone membrane can be sutured to the graft in the laboratory and the whole specimen can be conveniently stored in glycerin at room temperature. The use of a concentrated tissue culture solution in the form of eye drops postoperatively has decreased the complications of this procedure considerably.
