Chronic Pulmonary Emphysema and Cor Pulmonale A Clinical-Pathologic Conference

Abstract
A typical case of diffuse senile emphysema with cor pulmonale is briefly presented and used to point out deficiences in our present knowledge concerning the pathogenesis and etiology of this common disease process. The need for more concise data on the structural and functional integrity of pulmonary elastic tissue is discussed and a method for chemical dissection of the intact pulmonary network, outlined. This method is an adaptation of a method described by Hass (Arch. Path., 34807 and 971, 1942) for chemical dissection of arterial elastic tissue in its structurally unaltered state. The changes in structure and balance of the pulmonary and bronchial arterial and venous systems in chronic pulmonary diseases are also discussed.
