Effect of Mannitol on Salt Excretion during Water Diuresis

Abstract
In normal human subjects, during controlled water diuresis, large increases of urinary Na and Cl excretion with no change, or even a decline, in urine flow, were observed after the intraven. injn. of 100 cc. of 25% aqueous mannitol soln. The same injn. produced increases in urine flow, Na, Cl excretion, and decreases in urine Na and Cl concn. in 2 subjects who were oliguric due to water deprivation. In one expt., a large glucose infusion given during water diuresis increased salt excretion prior to, and in excess of, water excretion. Explanations of these phenomena are offered, based on recently advanced concepts of renal salt and water excretion.
