Abstract
This paper deals with the differential correction of the orbits of comets and minor planets in terms of certain elements and other constants. The formulae used are related to those of the Tietjen method, but are adapted for calculating machines. In the case of a comet which has been observed at a previous return, it is possible to link the two apparitions, thus obtaining a more reliable value of the correction to the mean motion. The resulting equations contain no more than three unknowns and afford a simple solution to the problem. An alternative to the usual least-squares solution is suggested. Keywords
