A comparison of the local anaesthetic-, “quinidine-like”- and adrenergic β-blocking-activities of five β-receptor antagonists

Abstract
Propranolol, pronethalol, INPEA, MJ1999 and MJ1998 exhibit local anaesthetic activity when assessed by infiltration anaesthesia and at motor nerve endings but only propranolol, pronethalol and INPEA exhibit local anaesthetic activity on the phrenic motor nerve. All the β-adrenergic blocking agents exhibit a “quinidine-like” activity and there appears to be a close correlation between local anaesthetic and “quinidine-like” activities, which cannot be extended to include adrenergic β-receptor antagonism.Keywords
