Abstract
An examination is made of three recent papers by Canny. It is concluded that his experimental results on the intensity of phloem respiration are antagonistic to a streaming mechanism based on cyclosis but not to one of activated mass-flow. The treatment of the velocity of the tracer profile down the axis is found to be rather misleading, and the location of this profile primarily in the conducting cells unconvincing. Several valuable features of the work are discussed.
