Development of a Taxonomy of Human Performance: A User-Oriented Approach

Abstract
A user-oriented approach is proposed for the development of new ways of describing and analyzing tasks and duties. The author considers it essential for these taxonomies to be developed and evaluated as operational information- getting and decision-making tools for use by system designers. Man-machine system design applications of this kind of tool are described in the decision areas of system characteristics, human factors engineering, selection, and training. Methodological proposals are made for the development of performance taxonomies in future years. Some current laboratory research assumptions and procedures used in developing taxonomies are criticized on the grounds that they are not adequately representative of the real world and do not lead to useful tools. Specific suggestions are presented regarding a modified laboratory approach.Keywords
