L-Form Infection of the Rat Kidney: Effect of Water Diuresis

Abstract
A persistent L-form infection of the kidney was produced in rats by injecting Streptococcus faecalis intravenously and then treating the animals with penicillin. A water diuresis was produced in half the rats by adding 5% glucose to the drinking water. Animals undergoing water diuresis rapidly eliminated L-forms from the kidney, whereas those drinking tap water ad libitum continued to show evidence of L-form infection for up to 8 weeks after termination of penicillin administration.
