Abstract
"Pleasure is oft a visitant: but pain clings cruelly to us." [Keats, Endymion].TREATMENT of pain constitutes a large part of the physician's practice, and the most favorable results come from healing of the disease or eradication of the source of pain. Even when this is possible, symptomatic relief may be needed initially. Furthermore, many diseases causing pain cannot be treated specifically, and symptomatic treatment of the pain with analgetics becomes essential. Analgetics are by definition compounds that relieve pain on systemic administration without affecting consciousness.
