Procedure for Exteriorizing the Carotid Artery in the Bovine

Abstract
A single incision for exteriorizing the carotid artery proved much more satisfactory for cattle than utilizing the 2 incision techniques recommended for goats. Detailed procedures for pre-operative, operative and postoperative conditions are described. Eight of 9 operations were successful and vessels remained in place even under frequent bleeding. The animals can be trained for sampling from the carotid loop with much less disturbance than by rectal puncture of the internal iliac, prepubic or the middle coccygeal arteries. Sampling from the loops also gave much more consistent values for detecting respiratory alkalosis under heat stress.
