Abstract
The ergonomic aspects of the design of a typewriter system for quadriplegic patients are discussed. The typewriter is operated by moving a light source fixed to the head of the patient, so that a lightspot can be projected on the control panel. The control panel consists of a matrix of characters, each of which is equipped with a light sensitive element. It is shown how the character arrangement, the geometry of the lightspot and panel and the way of generating a type command were optimised. Some preliminary results obtained from three normal subjects and from two quadriplegic patients are reported. Preliminary clinical experience with the device is encouraging. Keywords
