Thermal Expansion at a Surface

Abstract
A procedure is developed for calculating the thermal expansion near a solid surface. A rough argument indicates that, at high temperatures, αsurface/αbulk≈34〈uz2〉surface/〈uz2〉bulk, where α is the thermal expansion coefficient and 〈u z2〉 is the mean-square amplitude of vibration normal to the surface.This publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
