Abstract
Strongly dried films, 5 μ thick, of polyelectrolytes with acid groups were investigated. A band pair was fond, which is to be ascribed to the stretching vibration of the OH groups in the hydrogen bidges by which the acid groups are associated. In the cases of polystyrene sulphonic acid and selenonic acid, it is surprising that such extremely strong hydrogen bridges are formed, despite the acids involved being relatively strong. For this reason therefore we have investigated p-toluene sulphonic acid in CH2Cl2 and CCl4. It is shown that this is present dimerised through equally strong hydrogen bridges. These can form since the proton approaching the anion eliminates the mesomerism of the bonds in the latter almost completely, turning two of the three O-atoms into powerful hydrogen bridges acceptors. Keywords
