Abstract
Eighty-one patients with carcinoma of the distal part of the rectum were treated by electrocoagulation. The over-all five year survival rate was 47 percent, the morbidity rate was 21 percent. Fifty patients were treated by electrocoagulation alone and the survival rate was 58 percent. In the abdominoperineal resection group, the survival rate was 29 percent for five years. Electrocoagulation offers a viable altenative for the primary treatment of carcinomas of the distal part of the rectum that are 4 centimeters or less in diameter. Thus, a permanent colostomy with loss of potency and a high morbidity rate is avoided.
