Abstract
This paper examines living arrangements as both an outcome of previous lifestyle, behavior, and decisions and as an antecedent for other such events. These dynamics of living arrangements are illustrated through their relationships with sex and marital status, through analysis of health data from the National Health Interview Survey and by new analyses of data from the 1976 Annual Housing Survey. The most paradoxical finding is that despite their much lower incomes, not-presently-married women live in housing of considerably higher quality than do men in comparable marital statuses and living arrangements. Keywords
