Abstract
In 1937, a dental survey in the Island of Lewis, Scotland revealed a simple diet pattern of the people with high fish consumption and very little dental caries amongst the children. The present survey was undertaken to see if any change had occurred in the diet pattern and dental health of the children living on the island now, 30 years later. A team of two dieticians and two dental surgeons completed the survey in 1967 and 1968. Dental caries, gingival health, oral hygiene, tooth mottling and occlusion were all examined, and for selected children and their families, a household diet survey was completed. Fluoride levels of drinking water and teeth were also investigated. The findings compared with those of 30 years ago show a big change in diet pattern, and the dental health of the children has deteriorated significantly. Keywords
