Suburban Characteristics and Aged Net Migration

Abstract
This article attempts to determine the extent to which the elderly are attracted to or leave suburban communities in American metropolitan areas and to evaluate the push-pull and gravity theories of mobility for their ability to explain the phenomenon. The 825 suburbs of the 212 SMS As are used in a multiple regression analysis of net migration of persons aged 65 and over from and into suburbs between 1960 and 1970. The analysis indicates that during the decade, 672 suburbs lost aged populations due to migration and that the combination of the two theories explains 43% of the variance in the net migration of the elderly. Implications for central cities are discussed.
