Abstract
Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) in a patient following autologous bone marrow transplantation for a non-Hodgkin's centroblastic lymphoma was studied by immunohistochemistry and transmission electron microscopy. Our observations indicate that a large amount of polyomavirus, most probably JC virus, is taken up and segregated within vacuoles of macrophages by phagocytosis. A relevant role of macrophages in the pathogenesis of PML is emphasized. Keywords
