Innate generalization of a form discrimination without contouring eye movements.

Abstract
MONKEYS, REARED FROM BIRTH WITHOUT EXPERIENCE WITH VISUAL PATTERNS, WERE TRAINED TO DISCRIMINATE A HORIZONTAL FROM A VERTICAL LINE. AN OPTICAL SYSTEM MAINTAINED THE TRAINING AND GENERALIZATION STIMULI WITHIN RESTRICTED REGIONS OF S'S RETINA, EFFECTIVELY PREVENTING SS FROM CONTOURING THE EDGES OF THE FIGURES WITH THEIR EYES. UNDER THESE STIMULUS RESTRICTIONS MONKEYS STILL GENERALIZED TO A VARIETY OF FORMS IN A MANNER NO DIFFERENT FROM NORMALLY REARED MONKEYS.
