LOCAL ANAESTHETIC EFFECT OF OXYFEDRIN IN ANIMALS

Abstract
Prolonged surface anaesthesia and nerve block anaesthesia were obtained by local application of oxyfedrin (0.125-0.5% aqueous solutions) into the conjunctival sac of rabbits, and by periarticular injection into rats, respectively. Aqueous solutions of oxyfedrin are practically free from local irritant effect. The local anaesthetic activity of oxyfedrin, in comparison with lignocaine, is more intense and of longer duration but the onset of anaesthesia is slower. A method for evaluating drug-induced peripheral nerve-block anaesthesia is described.
