Abstract
Addition of varying amounts of Igepal CO 880 (nonylphenoxypolyethoxy-ethanol) to Apiezon C (hydrocarbon oil) coated open tubular columns reduced the “tailing” considerably, but there was little effect on relative retention times of n-decane, limonene, n-amyl acetate, n-octanal, and n-hexanol until appreciable amounts of Igepal were used. The observed retention times were changed only slightly with small amounts of Igepal. Addition of Igepal to Chromosorb G, treated with HMDS (hexamethyldisilazane) and impregnated with 1% Apiezon C, did not change the relative retention times until appreciable amounts were added, but observed retention times changed considerably with small amounts of Igepal. Efficiencies or tightness of bands with 0.03-inch i.d. open tubular columns have been improved by vigorously cleaning the tubing, the addition of adsorption-reducing material has reduced “tailing,” and improvement in resolution has been achieved. Keywords
