Abstract
Low-energy electrons of 700 and 1500 eV have been reflected off contamination-free surfaces of diamond, graphite and evaporated carbon in a UHV LEED/Auger chamber. The energy distribution in the region of K-shell loss is examined and related to known structure in the conduction bands for diamond and graphite, while that for evaporated carbon strongly suggests a graphite-like structure, in contradiction to earlier evidence from high-energy transmission electron diffraction.
