Significance of the Deep Femoral Artery in Atherosclerosis of the Arteries in the Lower Extremities

Abstract
Simultaneous atherosclerotic manifestations in the superficial femoral artery and in the bifurcation of the aorta and/or the iliac/common femoral arteries are the most common cause of arterial insufficiency in the lower extremities. In most cases there are no changes in the deep femoral artery; consequently, by reestablishing a good flow to this artery, which is very important for the nourishment of the lower extremities, it is possible to avoid a more peripheral intervention. Since 1960 we have applied this principle to 35 patients. Preoperative conditions, results of primary operations, and follow-up investigations are discussed.
