Abstract
Forty children with functional defects of articulation were drawn from speech classes in the Kalamazoo, Michigan schools and grouped into 25 2d grade students, 6 in the 3d grade, 5 in the 4th grade and 4 in the 5th grade. Words that are misarticulated are misspelled more frequently than words that are pronounced correctly. Maximal word lengths were significantly related to the frequency of misspellings. The presence of articulatory problems in the early grades may tend to be accompanied by problems in other language skills. Keywords
