Abstract
Study is made of the relative adequacy of alternative procedures for determining biparietal and bigonial measurements. One procedure calls for direct measurement of the child; the other involves radiography and measurement of the roentgenogram. Both are applied on a high plane of scientific rigor. The main sample consists of 94 white children between the ages of 4 and 5 yrs. Supplementary use is made of a child''s skull, estimated age 4 yrs. Major findings are biparietal diam. may be measured with high reliability by both procedures; bigonial diam. may be measured more reliably by the roentgenographic procedure than by direct measurement; and biparietal diam. is depicted more validly by direct measurement than by the roentgenographic procedure. The findings are considered sufficiently substantial and differential to warrant 2 recommendations. It is recommended that in growth studies on the young child biparietal diam. be taken by direct measurement, and that bigonial diam. be taken from measurement of the posteroanter-ior roentgenogram. Keywords
