Methods for the gas chromatographic analysis of soil atmosphere samples as well as the construction details of two devices for obtaining the samples are presented. Typical column materials, arrangements and operating conditions are reviewed. A new approach to the dual analysis of oxygen and carbon dioxide on the same sample using a stream splitter instead of a dual column valve is presented. Advantages of the stream splitter arrangement over the dual column valve arrangement include better zero control, faster analysis, and the lack of valve switching necessary during an analysis.
